Who We Are

We create opportunity for refugees fleeing war, terror, and persecution to build new lives of safety, dignity, and self-reliance.

What We Do

Since 1982, RefugeeOne has welcomed more than 17,000 refugees from every major world conflict, from survivors of the Cambodian killing fields and ongoing war in Syria to Africans fleeing genocide and Jews escaping communist oppression. Every year, RefugeeOne helps approximately 2,500 refugees and immigrants through a full range of programs that are both culturally and linguistically sensitive to the needs of our clients.

With the help of more than 1,000 volunteers, RefugeeOne walks alongside refugees on the road to self-reliance, greeting them at O'Hare, furnishing their first apartments, and matching them with mentors to help them adjust to their new lives. RefugeeOne's core programs include: English Language Training, Workforce Development, Youth, Wellness (Mental Health), and Immigration. The ultimate goal of these programs is to help refugees become self-reliant in as few as 6 to 9 months; on average, 95% of the clients we serve successfully meet this goal.

Currently, the majority of refugees being resettled in the U.S. and by RefugeeOne are:

  • Syrian's forced from their home due to the ongoing conflict
  • Iraqis who helped the recent U.S. military operations and Assyrian Christians fleeing religious persecution
  • Burmese ethnic and religious minorities fleeing government-instilled violence and persecution
